INTRODUCING OCR FITNESS FOR LIFE

Learning and Progression for Life

Through the fire, I have come from a pretty mundane lifestyle being overweight and unmotivated in life. I never was an athlete or even athletic. Sport through nutrition and training opened my life to things I could have never imagined and that is what I want to SHARE with others!

MY STORY - 10 YEARS AGO

From Humble Beginnings

So, like many other's with busy lives both work related and family, things slip. Health / Personal Care are some of the first ones to go. In these photos, I want to do a few things:

1. Show that you are in no way tied to a certain level of health or fitness because of age or genetics. I do not come from, nor possess superior genetics. Even today, I have to work extremely hard to stay lean, strong and fit while it may come easier for others. That's alright though! Like I, you should not be afraid of a challenge, nor let anyone tell you something is not possible.

2. Prove that with the proper amount of hard work in regards to consistent nutrition and exercise, you WILL see results no matter what! That is a given. How far you want to take it is up to you. Let me tell you that once I started to see results, the feeling was intoxicating and keeps me to this day working hard. As anyone else on this planet, you need to see results that align with your goals to stick with something long enough to make it habit forming.

Nutrition is 90% of the game and worthy of another talk, or (message me). Back in these days, I had an unhealthy relationship with food. Food was all processed and full of refined sugar. I used it as a "treat" to relieve stress or celebrate which is not what nature intended for us. I also ate WAY TO MUCH in volume of the wrong things and drank about 2 liters of soda/pop a day! At the age of 27 and 245lbs, I would see stars just bending over to tie my boots in the morning. With a family heart and diabetes history, I would have been destined for a shorter and quality reduced life very soon. I was told by many that genetics played a role in this and I was just dealt a "bad hand". I also failed to take responsibility for any of it too and did nothing to change it. Finding a role model and making small changes over years that I could stick with was key. I had failures along the way too! My favorite person in social media that inspires me to this day and lead to a lot of my success is Jeff Cavalier of Athleen X. Look him up on U-Tube. His quote in terms of food and whatever you changed was always, "Can you stick with if for a month, 6 months, a year, 2 years, 5 years..."? His thought was that if not, you were doomed to "yo-yo" and go back and forth. He is soooo right. He also talks a lot about having to like what you eat. Again, for me that is very true as well. Once you understand those 2 ideals, nutrition becomes very natural and that much more easy!

FAST FORWARD 5 YEARS

New to Fitness and see some Improvements - First Ever Race!

Things are now changing. During these 5 years admittedly, I was on some crash diets, which by the way DO NOT WORK! I got into weight lifting and was starting to see some change! It was very slow, but that's ok. It was moving in the right direction and every little gain is like a single brick. It took many bricks to build a full wall, and each success was just one of those bricks in the wall!
June 2015. My 1st ever race was a Spartan Race near where I lived. It was a work thing that was proposed. I never heard of a Spartan Race and only did it as I wanted to support and be a part of the work effort / team play attitude. After that Spartan Sprint... I was hooked! I remember going home that night wondering what this red wedge thing attached to the back of my medal was. I google it and in proper newbie fashion found out that it was part of a series of 2 other races... bigger races! I was over the top hooked! Two months later I would fly to a Super and Beast Weekend and complete my Trifecta... over 3 months later I flew twice to the USA and completed another, earning my x2 Trifecta. My life went from "ok" to full out race passion. I remember seeing elites and telling my work friends that I wanted to be that some day. I remember the laughs and jokes that same would not be possible and to "calm down". I made it my mission that year to become more. I knew it would not happen over night, but I knew that it would happen. Finishing in the top 500's in USA races was not overwhelmingly confident, but it was a start!
Like me, you need to find what drives the absolute heck out of you and fuels your passion to expand past the shackles of what currently holds you back. That passion is what will lead you every day. For me it was and still is competitive road, trail and OCR racing!

SPARTAN SPRINT JUNE 2015

This is where it all started...

I FAILED THIS BY THE WAY IN CASE YOU ARE WONDERING HOW I MADE OUT!

Body weight to strength ratio was still too weak. I had fun trying though and made it 3/4 way across!

ROPE CLIMB

Killed this and felt like a rock star doing it! Rocking all the cotton cloths that got heavy in the rain and old worn out sneakers that were not made for the mud! I had a lot to learn but again, had an absolute blast!

CURRENT WITHIN THE LAST FEW YEARS

Savage Race Pro

By this time now, my body to strength ratio is much better. I am now working much more on my running and aerobic capacity as well as strength & endurance. At this time in early 2018, I am finishing usually top 10-15 in Elite Races.

CURRENT DAY 2019

Gains have now translated into Podiums!

Fitness and nutrition has been on point for years now. Training is now so specific that seconds here and there and obstacle proficiency is key and practiced often. Race mind and mental prep is on point and I now believe I am a contender at races and know that I can podium!

Hard work does pay off, but this is just the beginning for me and fuels me to improve even further!

I like you, can achieve anything you want.

I feel a need to share this timeline to create conversation and help whomever wants the help to become the best version of you possible.

I am not here to sell anything, just offer advice and guidance to what is the key to my success in a nutshell:

AS you can see, I wasn’t always fit. From the ashes of the past, come the strength I put forward to my followers… TRUST. I relate well to the average person in that genetics didn’t make me great, nor do they hold me back. I came from a pretty mundane lifestyle of being overweight and out of shape until the age of 35 (to the tune of 245lbs). I turned into an Elite obstacle racer, road and trail racer through learning what I describe as the 4 pillars to success:

1. Consistency in eating via making small sustainable changes.

2. Consistency in training by taking on the amount of work you can manage day in day out, week in week out, month in month out... you get the idea!

3. Learn how to deal with setbacks in life such as injury! No one is going to avoid this! Be prepared to change gears and do what it takes to keep with it and not get discouraged.

4. Create a mental frame of reference where you spin every life obstacle or challenge into a positive that will fuel your efforts!

THIS WEEKEND WAS DUNTROON ONTARIO IN CANADA. SOUL CRUSHING AND GREAT ALL IN ONE WEEKEND!

Day 1 was the sprint. I was in the lead and in 1st place for the 1st time ever at the end of a men's elite heat. With only 50 meters left in the race, spear throw took me down and I finished 5th and off the podium. I was so disappointed in myself with such a plain obstacle that I practice at home and otherwise hit most of the time. I had to refocus and on Sunday, podium in the Super! Would have, Could have and Should have's have no place in racing and we must always move forward and stop looking back. I learned a lot that weekend!

BOSTON AUGUST 2019

First ever USA podium in the Spartan Super. Can now say that I have podium in USA and Canada. Was 29 seconds off of 1st, but more than happy that day in what was a very tough race!
I would finish 4th the next day missing the podium by 37 seconds!

MONTREAL SUPER AND SPRINT WEEKEND

First ever double podium weekend.
2nd overall in Sprint and 3rd overall in Super.
Very proud of these races as the Sprint was held at 2pm in 37 degree C heat which was NOT easy and I had to fight from behind to podium.
Sunday's Super POURED rain like I had never seen and thundered the whole course.
